It has been suggested drivers who park in cycle lanes should be hit with penalty points.

A Limerick Councillor has made the call, in the belief it would help clamp down on bad driver behaviour.

However, one cycling group has said existing rules need to be enforced first.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign described it as "completely normal to park in cycle lanes".

Vice chair of the group, Louise Williams, said "there is a total lack of enforcement".

She said there is "a lot of confusion, some of them are timed in Dublin. There is a lot of ambiguity".

"Get the guards out, and get them enforcing the law", she added.

Last weekend, cyclists held a demonstration in anger at ongoing delays to the Liffey Cycle Route.

The dedicated bike lanes running up and down both the length of the quays were first promised in 2011.

Despite a number of re-designs, work on creating them still hasn't begun.

Dublin City Council will discuss a proposal to trial the cycle route at its next monthly meeting.
