Scarlett Johansson has made her directorial debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival with Eleanor the Great, a heartfelt drama exploring intergenerational friendship and personal reinvention.

The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section, showcasing Johansson's transition from acclaimed actress to filmmaker.

Eleanor the Great follows 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, portrayed by June Squibb, who relocates from Florida to New York City after the loss of her best friend. There, she forms an unexpected bond with a 19-year-old student, played by Erin Kellyman. The narrative delves into themes of grief, connection, and the stories we tell ourselves, set against the vibrant backdrop of New York.

Johansson, inspired by her hometown and personal experiences, brings authenticity to the film. The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jessica Hecht, with cinematography by Hélène Louvart and music by Dustin O'Halloran.

Despite initial nerves, Johansson expressed pride in the project, describing the filmmaking process as a "humongous scramble" but ultimately rewarding. Eleanor the Great marks a significant milestone in her career, highlighting her versatility and commitment to storytelling.
