Angelina Jolie has spoken publicly about her split from Brad Pitt for the first time.

During an interview about her new Netflix film 'First They Killed My Father' with BBC News, the actress said:

"It was very difficult.

"Many people find themselves in this situation. My whole family have all been through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children.

"We are and forever will be a family and so that is how I am coping. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer."

Jolie filed for divorce in September last year, citing irreconcilable differences.

The couple had been together since 2004 and got married in 2014.

'First They Killed My Father' is a true-life account of the 1970s Khmer Rouge genocide through the eyes of a child.

"This war that happened 40 years ago and what happened to these people was not properly understood and not just for the world, but for the people of the country," Jolie said.

"I felt I wanted them to be able to reflect on it. It's through the eyes of a child and it's a lot about life."
