Adele was the hero of the Grammys overnight. She made an emotional speech about Beyonce and restarted her tribute to George Michael because she "couldn't mess this up for him."

The singer scooped 5 Grammys including the big two: Record and Album of the Year for "Hello" and "25".

But she said she "couldn't accept" it because Beyonce's "Lemonade" was such an inspirational album.

The groundbreaking long-play album released last year has won critical acclaim but hasn't garnered as much radio airtime (in Ireland at least) as her previous work.

Speaking onstage Adele said "I can't possibly accept this award. I'm very humble and grateful and gracious, but the artist of my life is Beyoncé. For me, the Lemonade album was just so monumental ... and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul bearing and we all got to see another side to you that you don't always let us see and we appreciate that."

She went on to say "All us artists here adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way that you make my black friends feel, is empowering and you make them stand up for themselves and I love you. I always have, and I always will."

Adele's gushing speech left Beyonce totes emosh altogether!

Beyonce didn't leave empty handed though. She won Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Music Video for Formation. She also gave a stunning performance of 'Love Drought' and 'Sandcastles'.

But back to Adele. She dropped the F-word and restarted her tribute to George Michael.

The singer was performing a slow version of Fast Love (see what they did there?) when she felt the need to halt the music and take it up from the beginning again.

"I know it's live TV... I'm sorry for swearing and sorry for starting again, can we please start it again? I'm sorry, I can't mess this up for him.
