More than 3,100 sexual offences were recorded by Gardai between March 2019 and March of this year.

It marks a 4.6 per cent year-on-year drop, which is the first time a decrease has been noted in over 5 years.

The Central Statistics Office says most of the offences, 31 per cent, happened in the Dublin region.

Noeline Blackwell, CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, says there is still a significant number of victims who are not going to Gardai:

"Do we need more investigation, more resources for investigation? We certainly need specialised units in every garda division in the country, because the rate is still so low.

"All the studies seem to show that the rate is less than ten per cent of offences that are reported.

"90 per cent of sexual offences go unreported."
