Organisers have announced that they've made the "difficult decision" to cancel this year's Great Ireland Run.

The event had been due to take place at Dublin's Phoenix Park last month and it's now been decided not to hold the race until 2021.

"We know this is extremely disappointing for all runners, and we thank everyone who had entered up until this point for their patience in allowing us to examine every possible option available to us," Race Director Dermot Nagle said of the decision.

"We made the difficult decision in the best interest of the health and wellbeing of all those involved in the event.

"We thank all of our participants, suppliers, volunteers and sponsors for their continued support, and we look forward to making the 2021 edition a real celebration of running."

"We are all disappointed that one of the top recreational road races in the country, as well as our own National 10km Championships will not take place in 2020," Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams added.

"Postponing this year's race is the right and responsible decision and we can all look forward to a fantastic event when the Great Ireland Run returns in 2021.

"We must say a huge thank you to our sponsors Deep Heat and Deep Freeze who have remained committed to the event throughout."
