Work will begin today to stop drivers going through Dublin's College Green.

It's estimated 10 thousand motorists drive illegally through the area every week.

At present- cars aren't allowed drive through College Green between 7am and 7pm on weekdays.

This is going to be extended to a 24/7 ban by Monday the 29th of May.

Work is now getting underway today to introduce it.

The council's traffic department says around 28 thousand private cars drive into the College Green area every week.

A third of them do so when they're not meant to according to the Irish Times.

The aim of the fulltime ban is to remove private cars completely from the area to allow public transport to flow better.

The right hand turn from Church Lane will also be eliminated.
