The government has refused to fund a controversial €25 million whitewater rafting facility in Dublin.

Dublin City Council sought €19 million for the project from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.

However, the Minister for Housing has refused to fund the proposed development on George's Dock.

Dublin TD Neal Richmond says he would be "sceptical" about the project, and suggested that an outdoor swimming pool could be more cost-effective.

Fine Gael Cllr. Danny Byrne has called for the scrapping of the proposed white water rafting facility in Georges Dock.

"Given that the facility has once again been turned down for funding I believe it is now time to shelve this project."

"There are so many problems facing Dublin that I do not think a white water rafting facility is top of anyone's list."

"Local swimming pools, playgrounds, youth facilities are all under severe pressure and we need to get the basics right before moving on to a grandiose project."
