Hi, Luke from 98FMs Big Breakfast!
I’m running in the Virgin Media Night Run on Sunday May 22nd & it’s all in aid of Simon Community.
I consider myself to be quite fit – I go to the gym two to three times a week – but the training for this has been tougher than I imagined. With the race only around the corner I thought I’d share some training tips for anyone taking part.
Long running at a reasonable pace
Set a distance & keep to a pace for each kilometre. This will help to build up your aerobic fitness and endurance. I’m able to comfortably hold a conversation if I wanted to at this pace but as I train alone, I only talk to myself! This is the pace you should run at for the Virgin Media Night Run.
Recover runs
To give the olde legs a break & a bit of time to recover I usually run for maximum of 45mins the day after a long run at a slower pace. I know I’m doing this well when I don’t feel tired and drained of energy after I’m done.
Footwear
I invested in a good pair of runners a couple of weeks out which I’ll use in the gym after the Virgin Media Night Run. The difference in how my feet feel after is unbelievable. Best decision I’ve made since undertaking the training. Worth the investment.
Running Outside
This may sound unusual but if you’ve been listening to 98FM’s Big Breakfast you’ll know Cooper was laughing at me for this. I had been running on a treadmill in my local gym, killing the times & felt great. Went for a run in Phoenix Park on the suggestion of Cooper & our Producer Suz. Wow. I was wrecked after it! Here’s me taking a break with friends.
