Metallica are rumoured to headline Slane Castle next year.

The Irish Sun is reporting that the legendary metal band are set to include a date in the famous venue as part of their WorldWired Tour.

Fans of the foursome have already been informed of a summer European tour, spanning from May to August next year.

The venue's owner Lord Henry Mountcharles has previously confirmed that the Slane concerts would return in 2019, after taking a break this year.

He also hinted that he's been in talks with a band who have never played the venue before.

After the announcement, The Irish Sun spoke to a music industry insider, who told the paper that Metallica would be the perfect choice.

"Heavy rock has always been the biggest draw for Slane.

"Metallica are the perfect choice for 2019 as they go right back to the heavy rock of Thin Lizzy who headlined the very first Slane in 1981."

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has previously spoken of their potential Irish show in 2018, which they were forced to pull out of as “the (Dublin) arena would not work due to the stage layout and the amounts of pyro we had planned”.

Slane's large, open air space could prove to be the perfect setting for their show.
