Water supply to large parts of the city is being restored this morning following repair works throughout the night.

Around 40,000 homes and businesses were affected yesterday, when a high-pressure water mains burst.

The pipe is understood to be at least 40 years old.

The utility company says there may be some discolouration, but insists the water is safe to use.

The outage extended from Dolphin's barn to Kilmainham, over the Liffey and towards the North east suburbs.

Uisce Éireann says due to the wide area affected, it was necessary to shut down the pipe during repairs.

Head of Operations at the firm, Margaret Attridge, says the country's city centres' networks are old, meaning similar ruptures cannot be ruled out in the future.

Ms. Attridge added over €250 million is being invested by the firm annually, to build resilience in the water network.
