Fresh from picking up his first senior cap for Ireland last month Matt Doherty has had a hugely impressive season so far.
The Wolves defender and his team sit nine points clear of second place Cardiff and can be crowned champions as early as this weekend should results go their way.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling it doesn’t happen to you that often in your career being in this type of situation where you’re top of the Championship and staring the Premier League in the face.”
Doherty spoke to Now That’s What I Call Sport today.
Growing up in Dublin Matt played at the highest level for his young age which meant he came across some talented youngsters also, two of who are current Republic of Ireland team mates.
“Obviously St. Kevins against Robbie (Brady) and Jeff (Hendrick), they had a great team.”
“That was the games at the time you were looking in the paper every week to see who you were playing on the Sunday.”
“That’s how it was when you were growing up; I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”
Matt was asked about his team’s current standing in the championship and how it would feel being a Premier League player.
“It could be one of the best feelings I’ve had so far (in my career).”
“I’ve dreamt about playing in the Premier League.”
“It’s what everyone wants to do, play in the best league in the world.”
Doherty claimed his first senior Ireland cap at the age of 26 in a 1-0 loss away to Turkey last month and gave his take on the experience as a whole.
“It was pretty special for me.”
“It was something my dad’s been wanting since I was a young kid playing.”
“I can always say I’ve got an international cap now which is pretty awesome.”
