While The Beast from the East blankets the whole country with inches of snow, motorists are advised not to travel unless absolutely neccessary.

If you have to make a journey, there are a few things to bare in mind before you get into the car.

The main points to remember:

Make sure your car and tyres are roadworthy, inflated to the correct pressure and the thread depth is above the legal minimum of 1.6mm.

When driving, motorists are being urged to remove ALL snow from their vehicle before setting off. Don't only remove from the windscreen, as snow from the roof and boot can fall off while driving causing accidents or injury.

Drive slowly and use fog lights in heavy snow.

Use a low gear if going down hill, avoid harsh braking and acceleration.
