Two people have been rescued off the Howth coast.

They were stranded on rocks at the base of the cliffs in Balscadden Bay, after they were cut off from the tide while walking.

It happened just before 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, but details are only emerging now.

Howth RNLI volunteer crew members launched the Inshore Lifeboat and quickly located them at the bottom of the cliffs.

The two tourists who were visiting the area were taken aboard the lifeboat and checked over before being brought safely to shore at Howth Lifeboat Station.

Noel Davidson from Howth RNLI describes what happened:

He says "our Inshore Lifeboat launched immediately, within 12 minutes of receiving the call and was on site three minutes later and located two tourists who were visiting the area, not familiar with the tides and found themselves stranded on rocks. We were able to take them on board the lifeboat, check that they were ok and return them to shore".
