If you're saving all your energy for New Years Eve, then we've some good news. There is a massive amount of decent films on the small screen this evening.

Here's our top picks of movies on TV tonight:

The Shawshank Redemption, TV3, 9pm

This 1994 classic needs no introduction. Whether you're watching it for the first or the 101st time, this drama starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman will blow your socks off.  It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne, who's wrongly jailed for his wife's murder. Over the course of his life sentence he bonds with a fellow inmate and tries to clear his name.

Gone Girl, BBC One, 9:45pm

Based on the book of the same name, this thriller starring Ben Affleck and Neil Patrick Harris follows the story of a woman who disappears without a trace on her wedding anniversary. Her husband and their marriage is scrutinised by the media and he finds himself accused of her murder.

The Great Gatsby, BBC Two, 11:30pm

This romantic thriller based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is about a writer who arrives in Long Island in 1922 and befriends a self-made millionaire with a reputation for lavish parties. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan and won two Oscars back in 2014.

The Green Mile, More4, 9pm

Another absolute classic on the small screen tonight. This movie from 1999 starring Tom Hanks follows a convicted child-killer who's been condemned to death row. He astonishes the prison guards with his good nature and miraculous healing powers but despite their fight, there's no hope of overturning his death sentence.

A Bug's Life, ITV2, 7pm

This film from the creators of Toy Story is one you can sit down with all the family to watch. The animated comedy involves a misfit but good-natured ant named Flik that is looking for "tough warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers.
