GAA president Liam O'Neill wants the great hurling debate to be all-inclusive and all-encompassing.

Hurlers, managers, fans and anyone involved in the game at all levels from Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Donegal will be invited to have their say.

"Hurling belongs to us all and we all belong to hurling too so everyone's voice counts here," O'Neill said at the launch of the Allianz Hurling League.

He added, "The little boy who lives in an unsuccessful county, who dreams of being a star and dreams of playing hurling for his county, his thoughts are every bit as important to me as the person who's lucky enough to be born in a county where success comes almost naturally."

The GAA president officially announced the Association's intention to hold a national debate on the sport and it's future following the submission of a document by Kilkenny legend Eddie Keher. The six time All-Ireland winner has called on the GAA to abolish yellow and red cards in hurling and his ideas have been backed by current Cats boss Brian Cody.

O'Neill was unable to give any clue as to what form, where and when the debate will take place.

"We're open on this. This is a suggestion which has come from outside us, We're facilitating the debate and we'll do that by whatever means we can."

The Allianz Leagues get underway this weekend with the Boys in Blue making the trip to Salthill to take on Galway but the focus in Division 1A will be the clash of reigning All-Ireland champs Clare and 2012 champs Kilkenny in Ennis.
