Stuart Bingham defied expectations to become the surprise winner of the 2015 World Snooker Championship after a tense final in Sheffield last night.

The 38-year-old beat 2005 champion Shaun Murphy by 18 frames to 15 in a thrilling match at The Crucible to become the oldest world champ since Ray Reardon, who won the tournament in 1978 at the age of 45.

Bingham had never progressed further than the quarter-finals before this year but took some impressive scalps along the way to this year's decider.

He defeated fellow Essex native Ronnie O'Sullivan in the quarter-final before knocking out the hot favourite in the semi-finals, Judd Trump with a win in a tense final frame decider.

Bingham's bank balance will expand greatly thanks to a winning cheque worth over €400,000 while he fires up the world rankings from 10th place to 2nd behind fellow Englishman Mark Selby.
