Shamrock Rovers will become the first League of Ireland side to have two teams competing in the league of Ireland.

The FAI announced today that a Rovers "B" team will become the eight team in the first division for 2014.

Following the decision of Mervue United and Salthill Devon to withdraw from the First Division in favour of a new Galway entity, the FAI were struggling as only seven teams were now in the second tier.

The first division side are not eligible for promotion to the Premier division, and will take part in this year's cup competitions.

The "B" Team squad will be made up mostly of under-age players that come through the Tallagh side's ranks, but they are also permitted to play three outfield players and one goalkeeper from the senior squad.

It's also good news for Rovers supporters, as season tickets will count for both teams. The first team will play on Friday evening's while the second team will play on Sunday's.
