A massive moment for traditional music lovers: at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford, a staggering 1,018 musiciansjoined forces on Thursday, 7 August to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest ever céilí band.

The attempt took place at Chadwicks Wexford Park in front of Glen Pollard, the official Guinness adjudicator.

Musicians from across Ireland, Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan took part in a high-energy performance featuring classic reels like The Wexford Polka, The Gaelscoil Polka, and The Little Diamond. Instruments ranged from tin whistles (as expected!) and fiddles, to concertina, accordion, banjo, guitar, mandolin, drums, piano and uileann pipes.

This smashing of the record—previously held by a Late Late Show Céilí Band of 384 performers as of March 2024—takes the Fleadh’s record-breaking streak to another level following last year’s tin whistle ensemble triumph.

Tune in to World Wide Reb, weekday mornings at 8.45am on 98FM's Big Breakfast for all the latest entertainment news.
