Raymond Moore, the man who sparked outrage in tennis for saying that women players ride on the coattails of men, has resigned from his role as CEO and tournament director at Indian Wells.

The resignation comes just a day after he was forced to apologise for comments he made on Sunday before the women's final in California.

He apologised for the comments yesterday, insisting they were “in poor taste” and “erroneous”.

"I am truly sorry for those remarks and apologize to all the players and WTA as a whole”, he added.

“We had a women's final today that reflects the strength of the players, especially Serena and Victoria, and the entire WTA. Again, I am truly sorry for my remarks."

World Number One Serena Williams responded to Moore’s claims, calling them “mistaken” and “very very very inaccurate”.

Moore has now resigned from his role as CEO and tournament director at the tournament.

"Ray let me know that he has decided to step down from his roles as CEO and Tournament Director, effective immediately," said BNP Paribas Open Owner, Larry Ellison.

"I fully understand his decision."
