Niall Quinn believes the government should encourage foreign direct investment in Irish football.

The Ireland legend feels the absence of funding has stopped the development of the League of Ireland.

Poor attendances continue to be one of the biggest problems facing clubs as the domestic game remains stagnant.

Americans, Russians and Arabs all own controlling stakes in Premier League clubs. The prize money from European football helps clubs, while others do not have the resources for long term planning or infrastructural improvements.

Shamrock Rovers pocketed €215,000 in the Europa League while second round losers, St Patrick's Athletic have a boost of €440,000 for the season.

Cork City will come away with €675,000 regardless of the outcome of their game with GENK. Dundalk are the team looking to go where no side has gone before in Irish football.

All the way to the group stages of the Champions League, Quinn has told 98FM Sport that they might make it.

But that a long term strategic plan will be needed for football to really grow in the country.

The former Sunderland chairman believes the League of Ireland has the potential to be bigger and better.

The Irish legend doesn't believe it's up to the FAI to overhaul the domestic game. He’s calling on the government to try to entice investors to Irish football:
