Ireland’s Number One tennis player James McGee will be unavailable for the Davis Cup due to scheduling commitments.

The news comes as Ireland captain Conor Niland announced his team to for the Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group III Competition.

McGee recently came close to reaching the first round of the Australian Open, losing in the final qualifying round to German Daniel Brands earlier this month.

McGee’s absence means Ireland’s Number 2 Sam Barry leads the team, with Bjorn Thomson as his Number two and Peter Bothwell at Number three.

They will also be joined by doubles specialist David O’Hare.

Niland is happy about the makeup of his team. “I am very pleased to announce a team with a good mixture of youth and experience for this tie in Estonia”, he said.

“With the retirement of James Cluskey and unavailability of James McGee, it is a good opportunity for us to launch our young upcoming players into the Davis Cup arena”

The tie takes place at Tere Tennis Centre, in Tallin, Estonia in March.

Ireland will be seeking promotion to Europe Zone Group II for 2017.
