Ibrahimovic facing UEFA investigation over links to betting company

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is facing an investigation from UEFA's Ethics Committee.

They're looking into a potential rule breach by the veteran AC Milan and Sweden striker.

It's alleged Ibrahimovic has a financial interest in a betting company.

Such a move is banned by European football's governing body under Article 31(4) of its regulations.

It's believed the 39-year old's involvement with Maltese gambling brand Bethard has sparked the investigation.

A company owned by Ibrahimovic - Unknown AB - owns 10 per cent of shares in Bethard, something which breaks UEFA regulations.

Ibrahimovic was announced as a Bethard brand ambassador and co-owner in 2018.

"Through the agreement we will not only have an outstanding brand ambassador, but also a very engaged co-owner who I know will push us relentlessly forward”, said Erik Skarp, co-founder and CEO of Bethard Group at the time.

Addressing the issue at the time, Swedish Football Association general secretary, Hakan Sjostrand, said, "According to FIFA's regulations and code of ethics, no player may directly or indirectly own shares in betting companies.”

Ibrahimovic could face a fine and/or a ban of three years for his links to Bethard.

UEFA statement:

In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has today been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by Mr. Zlatan Ibrahimović for having an alleged financial interest in a betting company.

Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.
