GAA club championships could be redesigned as some counties postpone April fixtures

The Dublin county board says they may have to redesign the format of their club championships for 2020, amid uncertainty over when GAA activity can resume.

All GAA activity around the country has been suspended until March 29th at the earliest, in a bid to help contain the spread of Covid 19.

Earlier, Galway announced they would postpone their opening round of club championship action, which had been set for the first weekend in April, while Limerick have postponed all club championship games scheduled for the month.

The Dublin county board have made a similar decision, withs secretary John Costello saying that they may be forced to design a new championship format for 2020,  if they are unable to resume playing in May.

"The Dublin Adult Competitions Control Committee have postponed all grades of club championship games fixed for April due to the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of activity.

"If the current pandemic continues beyond April it is proposed to engage with the Leinster Council and the National Competitions Control Committee with a view to restructuring our games programme for 2020. This may include the redesign of current formats. If so, we will engage with the cubs prior to any decision being made.

"Adult leagues will resume when the sanction is approved by the Statutory Bodies," he says.

Costello has also reminded clubs and teams that collective training is not permitted for any sides, at any age grade.

"Please ensure your club teams are adhering to the directive that no training or games can take place at any levels during this pandemic."

Last night, Dubs star Jack McCaffrey urged communities around Ireland to do everything in their power to reduce the possibility of transmitting the new coronavirus.

McCaffrey's message was tweeted by Dublin GAA on Sunday, in McCaffrey's role as a doctor at Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.

"The reason for this video is that I am asking everybody else to continue to do everything in their power [to help,]" said McCaffrey.
