Darren Murphy handed the reins at First Division Cobh Ramblers

Cobh Ramblers have confirmed that Darren Murphy is their new manager. 

He replaces Stuart Ashton, who left the club in July. Murphy has been in temporary charge since, with the club yet to win under his stewardship.

The County Cork side currently sit second from bottom in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

Murphy has signed a contract as Ramblers boss through to the end of the 2023 season.

"We believe Darren to be an innovative, highly methodical, ambitious young manager," read a Cobh board statement, "We are confident that results will in time better reflect all of the improvements that Darren and his backroom team are making behind the scenes."

36-year old Murphy began his playing career with Ramblers, making 77 appearances before a move to Cork City in 2007.

After moving to England he was part of the Stevenage side that rose from the Conference Premier to League One inside four seasons.

Murphy cut his managerial teeth with Cobh Wanderers in the Munster Senior League, and joined Ramblers as U19 head coach at the start of this season.

He wants to make the most of the opportunity afforded to him by the Cobh hierarchy.

“I really appreciate the club showing their faith in me and my team," Murphy said, "We’re all happy to continue on after our spell so far.

"We came in to help the club and the players. That’s our goal and we’ll continue with that. We’re going to continue on that good work and bring Cobh Ramblers to the next level.

"The club are more than supportive of us off the pitch and long may that continue.

"It’s been a tough season. That brings on the will to improve and have a better season next year. It takes time.

"We will keep continuing to help these players succeed. We want this club to succeed and we’ll give it our all, at every training session, at every match. This is football.

"Once the club is going in the right direction then that’s the main goal.”
