Premier League club Bournemouth have confirmed that a member of their playing staff has returned a positive coronavirus test.

It is one of two new coronavirus cases discovered in the Premier League this weekend but the second one was at another club which has not been revealed.

The Cherries have not named the player in a short statement released on the club website this morning which reads: "AFC Bournemouth can confirm that one of its players has tested positive for Covid-19, following the club’s second round of testing.

"Medical confidentiality means the player’s name will not be disclosed, and the club asks for this to be respected.

"In line with Premier League protocols regarding positive tests, he will self-isolate for a period of seven days before being tested again at a later date.

"Following strict adherence of the Premier League’s return to training regulations, the club’s training ground remains a safe working environment for players and backroom staff, who will continue to be tested for Covid-19 twice per week."

There were 996 tests of Premier League players and staff conducted last week on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

That was up from 748 the previous week which saw six positive tests returned from three different clubs when the results were announced on 19 May.

Three of the positive results were at Watford, including their defender Adrian Mariappa, while Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan was another one of the six.

Watford manager Nigel Pearson has also revealed that two of his players are self-isolating after their family members tested positive.

Squads from the top-flight began non-contact training last Tuesday for the first time since the Premier League was suspended on 13 March.

The Premier Legaue is hoping to resume the season by mid-June but are still awaiting UK government sign-off on the guidance for the second phase of contact training.
