Atlético Madrid have won the La Liga title for the first time since 1996.

They finished three points ahead of Barcelona, but just one goal could have snatched the Championship from their hands.

They faced Barcelona at the Nou Camp today, knowing that whoever won the game would win the league title. Atlético Madrid had a three point lead over Barca, but with a better head to head record, Barca would win the league with a win.

Alexi Sanchez opened the scoring for Barca with a thunderbolt after 33 minutes to give them a 1-0 half time lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors, as Diego Costa and Arda Turan limped off, and could well miss next week's Champions League final.

Diego Godin headed home for Atlético just after half time, to make it 1-1.

Both sides had chances to clinch the game, but a draw was enough to clinch Madrid the title.
