2,000 firefighters across Ireland are returning to the picket lines today.

Retained fire crews will resume their strike action after rejecting a Labour Court recommendation on pay and conditions.

However, they say they will cover life-threatening emergencies.

Dublin Fire Brigade operates two retained fire stations - Skerries and Balbriggan.

Meanwhile, the 12 full-time stations should remain unaffected, unless they have to cover a call in the affected areas.

SIPTU says local authorities have refused to agree on an emergency cover plan during the work stoppages.

The union has accused them of pitting the public against the men and women of the retained services.

Divisional Organiser Karan O'Loughlin thinks it's time for action:

"I think it's time the government came to its senses and realised that the year of neglect that have caused this problem, means that it is going to take some resources to fix it".
