Dublin camogie manager David Herity says he sees shades of the All Ireland winning Kilkenny team he played with among his current charges.
The five-time All Ireland winner with the Cats admits he’s been hugely impressed by the work ethic and commitment of the players.
Herity succeeded Shane O’Brien having previously served as a selector before taking the top job.
The Kilkenny native says the Dubs have the same mindset that has brought such success to Kilkenny:
“The one thing I loved when I was with Kilkenny was to be involved with a group of players that were highly motivated and that they were driving themselves on the whole time to try and be better.
“That’s exactly what I have with this Dublin team here, it’s fantastic. It’s the reason I love being part of this group as well.
“I just hope the girls get the rewards they deserve for the effort they put in during training and hopefully the victories will start coming now.”
The Dubs face Waterford in division one of the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues on Sunday.
The Girls in Blue began with a loss to Cork, going down by 1-7 to 0-4. Herity doesn’t believe that score line was a fair reflection on how tight the game was:
“There’s no doubt about it, it was 0-5 to 0-4 heading into the last 5 minutes we had chances with a few frees it just didn’t go our way, a long free into the box was finished to the net.
“It just landed in a puddle of muck, two girls went for it, clashed it just happens the Cork girl was a little stronger and finished into the net.
“The score-line six points was a huge distance considering there was probably only a point in it and it was level for 55 minutes of the game.
“The girls will learn from that, we spoke about it afterwards that it is easy enough to get to within such a lose margin to some of these top teams but it’s about the last 5-10 minutes and if you have the belief to get yourself over the line.
“That’s the huge psychological element that they have to breach as well to understand they are good enough to finish off these teams, its one thing knowing it but another thing doing it that’s the level we have to get there this year.”
