Plans for a €25m white-water rafting facility in Dublin have moved a step closer.

The proposed development is causing controversy over its cost and need.

Dublin City Council has invited expressions of interest to contractors to build the Georges Dock White Water Rafting Facility.

This is the first stage in the public procurement process, which has been criticised by some for its timing, during the housing crisis.

Former Tánaiste, Senator Michael McDowell, says it's a disgrace that its got this far.

Mark Fay from the North wall Community Association says residents need answers on what will happen to the surrounding areas: "We want to know what's going to happen with that street, because at the moment we're hearing nothing, and people are getting very very worried."

DCC aims for stage one of this process to take around 4 months to complete after which a decision will be made on moving to stage two.

It says: "Dublin City Council has advertised on eTenders stage one of a two stage Public Procurement process to procure the main contract for the construction of the Georges Dock White Water Rafting Facility. Stage 1 is an expressions of interest exercise to pre-qualify contractors in order to assemble a shortlist that will be invited to submit a tender at stage 2.

"It is envisaged that stage one will take approximately 4 months to complete after which a decision will be made on moving to stage two."
