Record breaking temperatures at Death Valley

The United States Weather Service has recorded the hottest ever temperature on earth.

Just before 4pm on Sunday highs reached 54.4C (129.9F) in Death Valley, California.

While there are reports from 1913 that the same location once hit 56.6C, that recording is often disputed.

This means that on Sunday 16th August Earth was as hot as it's been in known history!

Death Valley is a desert located near the Nevada border of California.

The only other places on the planet that come close to its heat include Kuwait and Pakistan, where in recent years highs hit 54C.

This record breaking temperature comes as officials warned Californians about wildfires burning near the Nevada state line.
