A proposal to fly the Palestinian flag over City Hall has been rejected.
A number of Dublin City Councillors had called for the move to show support for the people of Gaza but it was defeated.
The Israeli ambassador had written to the Council before the meeting asking them not to fly the Palestinian flag.
Councillors voted 39 to 10 to fly the flag but this wasn't enough for the motion to pass.
There was also a call to fly a peace flag instead but there was confusion over what this and it was adjourned.

Independent group leader Cllr Cieran Perry was one of those who brought the motion which stated:
''With the continuing indiscriminate slaughter taking place in Gaza this council agrees to fly the Palestinian flag above City Hall for a week as a sign of solidarity.
The support for the Ukrainian people shown by Dublin City Council in the aftermath of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine has set a precedent. The indiscriminate targeting of people in Gaza, similar to the indiscriminate targeting of the Ukrainian people, warrants an equivalent public display of opposition to the murder of Palestinian civilians.''
He said in a statement it was ‘disappointing that Fianna Fail refuse to support the Palestinian people. You do not represent the view of the Irish people’
He added ‘thousands had marched in the last few weeks supporting the Palestinian people and calling for an end to the slaughter of innocent civilians’
