The sod’s been turned on a massive indoor sports arena in Blanchardstown.

250 people are expected to work on the building of the complex which will open in November 2016.

The National Indoor Arena will have a 200 metre running track and viewing areas for 1900 people.

But it will also house training facilities for gymnastics and boxing and can house major competitions for those events as well.

The building will be used for elite athletes but Chief exec of the National Sports Campus David Conway says the community can use it as well.

Sports Minister Paschal Donohue turned the sod on the facility this morning, he says it’ll be a welcome boost for Irish sport.

"This centre is going to open in November 2016. It's going to offer fantastic facilities in athletics, in gymnastics, great viewing facilities and it will lay the foundations for further excellence in Irish sport."

The arena also got a financial boost this morning from the Minister, who announced an extra €800,000 in funding towards the project.
