A young Indian woman, who is holidaying in Ireland, was swept off the cliffs at the Wormhole on Inis Mor, by a freak wave last week.

Apu Gupta from Calcutta in India was taking photos from the popular tourist spot, home to the Red Bull Cliff diving series, when the accident happened.

But as luck, like REALLY good luck would have it, Seamus McCarthy, an advanced paramedic with the Ennis Ambulance base and his girlfriend Fionnuala Quigley, witnessed the whole thing and rushed to her rescue.

The whole thing was filmed by another tourist

As Fionnuala ran to get help, Seamus and other visitors tried to reach Apu.

Apu, who was holidaying with her mother, said the water broke her fall and she was really lucky to be able to hold onto a rock at the bottom of the cliff until help arrived.

“Other people came and we managed to get an army-type jacket and a backpack and we hooked the jacket onto the backpack”. Seamus said.

The rescue apparatus was lowered to Apu and she tied it around her waist while Seamus and another tourist pulled her slowly up the cliff face.

Emerging with only a shattered ankle, today Apu said that Seamus and Fionnuala had saved her life.
