A cancer support centre is calling for people to join its yearly 'Torch of Hope Relay' around Dublin Bay to celebrate cancer survivors and honour lost loved ones.

ARC Cancer Support Centres, which are based near the Mater, Beaumont, James' and Vincent's hospitals, offer a holistic approach to people who have been affected by cancer. Its clients are offered psychological support, complementary therapies and counselling services free of charge.

Hundreds of people who have been affected by cancer are expected to turn out for the relay, which takes place around Dublin Bay on Sunday October 8th.

Separate groups will leave from the Wooden Bridge in Dollymount, and Blackrock Park, before meeting at the Sean O'Casey Bridge over the Liffey to take part in a Survivors' Celebration Lap, where the Torch of Hope cauldron will be lit at CHQ.

Jennifer Hogan, who has survived cancer, has taken part in the Torch of Hope Relay before and says it is the highlight of her year "There's such a sense of camaraderie, of us all being in this together, of everyone wanting the very best for each other."

"If you were feeling down before the Torch of Hope Relay, you'll be feeling a thousand times better afterwards - it's hugely inspiring and uplifting. For those of us who have survived cancer, it's about grabbing life by the bootstraps and living it to the full. I would encourage people to lend their support in whatever way they can", she said.

Organisers, who promise a "fantastic evening of entertainment, including a special musical treat from singer Christy Dignam of Aslan and some surprise celebrity guest appearances", are hoping to raise €65,000.

Mairead Mangan, Head of Fundraising, ARC Cancer Support Centres, is hoping lots of people will turn out on the day to show their support. "It's a walk suitable for all fitness levels with people able to join in at any point that best suits them along the route."

"We need as much support as possible to help us to meet this growing demand by people signing up to take part or sponsoring those who are", she said.

To register and receive a fundraising pack and sponsorship card for the Torch of Hope Relay, email fundraising@arccancersupport.ie, or click here before Friday, October 6th.
