Clerys workers are preparing to meet the store's liquidator tomorrow to see if they can salvage lost wages and holiday pay.

As they continue to fight for money that's owed to them, attention is now turning to the iconic building and what the future plans are for it.

It’s rumoured the new owners want to turn it into a shopping mall with offices and possibly a hotel.

They feel they can do this as not only do they own the building on O'Connell Street, they also bought a number of buildings behind the former department store that back onto Marlborough Street.

Damian O’Reilly is a lecturer in Retail management in DIT, he says if this is the plan, it could be a huge boost for the O’Connell Street area:

“If they were able to put in 30 stores and the average number of employees in each of those stores is around 20. That would create employment for five to six hundred straight away. Office space would create another five or six hundred. And then you have the hotel".

Former customers of the shop were still coming to read the notice from the liquidators on the O’Connell Street window.

One customer said she was only in the store last Monday and bought “a jacket, a zipped cardigan, it was lovely and I was coming in today to get another one.”

Another lady was only shopping there last week and has over one hundred Euro worth of gift vouchers that are now worthless.

SIPTU reps are meeting with the liquidator at Liberty Hall tomorrow morning, ahead of a protest by workers outside the shop at lunchtime.
