What Is The Marriage Referendum About?

The head of the Referendum Commission, the group which issues impartial information in the run up to referendums, has been clearing up any confusion ahead of the marriage equality vote.

Groups calling for people to vote no on Friday 22nd May are claiming that allowing two gay people to marry would negatively affect children.

Every children's charity in the country says that it believes voting yes would be in the best interests of children, and have told no campaigners that they are "using children as pawns in a way that is dishonest".

Today, Mr Justice Kevin Cross addressed concerns that a yes result on May 22nd would have a negative impact on children who are being placed for adoption.

He said "there is no automatic right to adoption in Ireland - and that will not change regardless of the result on May 22nd."

The head of the Adoption Authority of Ireland, Geoffrey Shannon, has also confirmed this saying that "if the birth mother decides that she does not want to place her child with a same-sex couple, that decision will invariably be respected."

Mr Justice Cross has also allayed concerns surrounding surrogacy, pointing out that "at the present moment surrogacy is not regulated at all - there is no right of access and there's no legal right to prohibit anybody accessing surrogacy".

And for people confused that voting yes on May 22nd may force churches to start hosting weddings for same-sex couples, the Referendum Commission has clarified that the vote has no impact on religions.

Mr Justice Cross said "the priest will be able to say 'I'm sorry gentlemen' you do not fill the requirements as far as my church is concerned, in the same way a priest already refuses couples who refuse to take part in a pre-marriage course".
