It's been ten years since we were introduced to WEEE.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment service has helped people in Ireland recycle over 75 million electrical items since 2005.

More than 250,000 tonnes of electrics, which would have ended up in landfill, have been recycled as part of the scheme in the past 10 years. Laid out in a line, those goods would stretch 1,066km, the distance from Dublin to Paris.

WEEE has released the statistics to mark its 10th anniversary.

Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland said “As a country we have been outstanding in reaching our WEEE EU recycling targets to date. We have been a Europe leader in this area and we want to lead the way in achieving 65% take back rates in the coming years.” he said.

However, WEEE says one in four people are still hoarding at home or putting it in the rubbish bin, despite there being more than 5,000 collection points all over the country.
