The Environment Minister has announced revised water charges.

Charges for one-person households will be capped at €160 a year until 2019, while all other households will be charged €260.

Alan Kelly says a Water Relief Allowance will reduce those figures by €100.

PPS Numbers

The Minister has also announced that PPS numbers will no longer be required to register to Irish Water.

Irish Water has been told to destroy PPS numbers already gathered with independent verification for data protection.

Water charges won't be introduced until January 2015, and the first water bills now won't land until the first week of April 2015.

What if people refuse to pay?

Households who don't register with Irish Water by February will receive an automatic bill of €260 per year - they also won't be entitled to the €100 discount.

Minister Alan Kelly has told the Dail that "these charges are affordable - €3 per week for families, among lowest in Europe".

There will be no call out or service charge from Irish Water if there is a problem with your water.

The Environment Minister says he wants to remove the threat of lowering water pressure to those who refuse to pay.

Renting

If you rent your home, your landlord is entitled to pass water charges on to you.

Landlords must contact Irish Water to pass on their tenants details, if they wish to pass their charge on to those renting their house.

If tenants refuse to pay after their details have been registered, landlords will be given the power to deduct unpaid bills from tenants' rental deposits.

Water Pressure

The Environment Minister says he wants to make sure Irish Water can never be sold to a private company.

Alan Kelly has told the Dail that if a future Government was to attempt to privatise the company, the issue would have to be put to a referendum.

The Minister has also called on Irish Water not to proceed with performance-related bonuses for staff for 2013 and 2014.
