A court has heard that a violent criminal “met his match” when he tried to rob a shop on the North Circular Road.

A brave shopkeeper managed to wrestle Daniel Garland to the ground after he threatened him with a knife last October.

Armed with a knife, Daniel Garland went into a SPAR shop in Drumcondra on October 18th last year and threatened staff to hand over the contents of the till. He made off with €460.

Three days later, he decided to do the same thing in another SPAR shop on North Circular Road. He pulled a knife on shopkeeper Hai Ping Li, who refused to go down without a fight.

He hit the 34-year-old with the leg of a table and jumped him outside the shop when he tried to make his escape. He even managed to hold on to him until Gardai arrived.

Garland, who lives on Belvedere Road, was wearing the same clothes he’d been wearing in the earlier raid, which made it easy for Gardai to identify him on CCTV footage.

The father of one admitted carrying out the robberies to get money for drugs.

The judge said he’d “met his match” when he robbed Mr. Li, and sentenced him to 21 months behind bars.
