Two Prison Officers Injured By Inmate At Mountjoy

Two prison officers have been injured in an attack by an inmate at Mountjoy Prison this morning.

The unprovoked assault on the two guards happened at around 8:30am.

The officers, aged in their mid 30's and mid 40's, received slash wounds after an inmate used a makeshift weapon.

They were taken to hospital, where their injuries are described as serious, but not life-threatening.

The Irish Prison Service has launched an investigation into the incident and gardaí have also been notified.

Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald says she is thinking of the families of the victims..
