Two people have died on our countries roads in separate crashes in the past 24 hours as 'Operation Slow Down' comes to a close.

Gardaí are investigating a collision which claimed the life of a 28 year old man in Roscommon in the early hours of this morning.

At around 20 past 1 this morning the driver of a jeep was fatally injured when he struck a car and crashed into a field at Coolteige Cross, hitting a concrete fence.

The 23 year old male driver of the car and his 32 year old female passenger were uninjured.

Meanwhile, a man in his mid-70s has died after the car he was driving hit a ditch in Co Clare this afternoon.

It happened on the Loughville to Inch Road, just off the Ennis to Ennistymon Road, at ten past twelve.

A woman who was also in the car has been taken to University Hospital Limerick, where her condition is described as stable.

A post mortem will be carried out on the man's body, which was removed to the same hospital.
