A father and son have appeared in court charged with helping an armed robber escape from custody.

Derek Brockwell, who was once on the UK’s most wanted list, managed to break free while on a visit to Tallaght Hospital.

Brockwell was serving a 7 year sentence in Portlaoise Prison for a series of armed robberies when he was brought to Tallaght Hospital last February for a medical check up.

It was there that he made his dramatic bid for freedom –two prison officers who were with him were stabbed and Brockwell fled the scene on a motorbike. But he was arrested just over 24 hours later in Belfast when police found him drinking outside a pub.

This morning 58 year old James Donohue from St Oliver’s Park in Rathoath in Meath appeared before Tallaght District Court where he was charged with helping a prisoner escape from custody.

His son 32 year old Alan Donohue, also with an address at St Oliver’s Park, appeared before Navan District Court where he was charged with the same offence.

Both men were granted bail and will appear before the courts again next month.
