TV licence fee renewals dropped 25 per cent in the first week of July according to new figures.

Stats shared by Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin, reveal a significant drop in licence fee revenue following three weeks of controversy at RTÉ.

3,428 fewer households renewed their licence fee when compared with the same time last year.

While the broadcaster also saw a 40 per cent drop in new licence fees.

June experienced a much smaller decline, with only a 2 per cent fall. However, that was before all the drama truly kicked off.

The figures reveal the broadcaster has lost almost €934,000 in licence fee revenue between the two months.

Government Reaction

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has urged people to continue to pay their licence fee pointing out it supports independent productions as well as RTÉ.

However, Ministers fear the decrease in revenue seen in the first week of July will be replicated through the rest of the month.
