Trinity College has come out on top of the Sunday Times Good University Guide for the 17th year in a row.

It's retained the number one spot with University College Cork coming in second place and University College Dublin 3rd.

Dublin City University remains in 6th position in the list, one place ahead of the highest ranked institute of technology - Waterford IT - in 7th.

DIT has slipped in this years list, falling from 7th last year to 11th position this year.

Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology is up three places from 20th to 17th.

IT Tallaght is down one to 20th and IT Blanchardstown is unchanged in 21st position.

Compiler of the Sunday Times Good University Guide, Zoe Thomas, says there are a number of factors that make Trinity College the top third level institute year on year:

"It has very very strong Leaving Certificate entry points, it's research income is always the highest.

"It has highly employable graduates and a great proportion of firsts and 2:1s, and a high proportion of student to staff ratios."
