Secondary school teachers with the ASTI have narrowly rejected the Government's pay proposals for new entrant teachers.
Under the plans, more than 60,000 newer entrants into the public service would receive average pay increases of over €3,000.
The INTO primary teachers union has already rejected the proposals, while the TUI - which represents both primary and secondary teachers - voted to accept them.
ASTI members have now voted to reject the measure by 53% to 47%.
58% of members voted in the ballot.

ASTI President Breda Lynch observed: “ASTI members remain steadfast in their determination to achieve justice for their lower paid colleagues – that is, equal pay for equal work.
"This latest proposal from the Government represents insufficient progress and does not achieve equal pay. We will continue to pursue the full restoration of pay for our lower paid colleagues.”
