Garda Tony Golden has been laid to rest following a State funeral in Co Louth.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Blackrock for his requiem mass - which heard he was a ‘hero’ - who’ll never be forgotten.

His family have now said their final farewell to the 36-year-old - at a private burial in Heynestown.

Tony Golden’s coffin was carried into St Oliver Plunkett’s Church in Blackrock - shrouded in the tricolour - along with his garda cap and gloves.

Thousands of officers escorted his funeral cortege - to honour their fallen colleague - who died in Sunday’s shooting in Omeath.

His wife Nicola - and his three young children Lucy, Alex and Andrew - were joined by mourners including President Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan says Tony gave his life protecting others, while Chief Celebrant Fr Padraig Keenan said the entire nation mourns the loss of Garda Golden - the 88th member of the force to die in the line of duty.
