There's been a 40 percent increase in shoplifting in the inner city.
There was almost 1800 incidents in the first half of this year compared with less than 1200 during the same time last year.
Retailers put the hit to businesses at around 30 thousand euro annually.
The increase is in part due to a change in the way the crime is recorded but shop owners say it also tallies with their own experiences.
