A red light zone about an hour away from the Vatican has been given the green.

From April, Rome will officially allow prostitution in the EUR business district south of the city. Authorities are hoping the move will help limit the sex industry to a single non-residential area.

Prostitutes caught working outside the designated area face fines of up to 500 euro.

If the experiment proves successful, the council wants to set up to three separate red light zones in the area.
