A box containing radioactive material has been stolen following a burglary in Swords.

Gardai say the material is “highly dangerous” and are warning people to stay away from it.

Sometime over the weekend, seven lightning rods were stolen from a building on Balheary Road in Swords.

They were being stored in a red metal box and are said to be radioactive and highly dangerous.

If handled, they will cause radioactive contamination to the person’s hands and clothing.

If the rods are cut up or dismantled they could cause local environmental contamination and expose a person to huge levels of radiation.

Dr. Ann McGarry of the Radio logical Protection Institute says the thieves may not even release how dangerous they are.

Gardai say the rods have no scrap value and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
